Medellín is a transformed city that packs a punch in its culture, innovation and its ability to have fun. It has emerged from its notorious history and is fast becoming known as the vibrant city that it is. Its language sector is following suit and now boasts a great selection of options for the keen learner.
About the city
Nestled in a valley in the Colombian Andes, Medellín stretches along the valley floor and offers mountain backdrops in every direction. Nicknamed the City of Eternal Spring, it has good temperatures all year round and outdoors life is active.
Its high-rise apartments create an urban landscape beneath the peaks. Its slum areas sprawl up the mountainsides but are not forgotten – the cable car metro system integrates the comunas into city life.
Parks and green space are small but can be found, and provide a peaceful oasis among the bustle of the city.
Most visitors stay in El Poblado where you find independent boutiques, hip coffee shops, upmarket restaurants and buzzing nightlight. Nearby Envigado is popular for its smaller town-feel and Laureles competes with the cool of Poblado but with (slightly) less party.
Or if you have more time and like a more structured approach, EAFIT University offers good courses. Private tutors are plentiful all over the city, some of the most popular are Nathalie, Diana, Carlos, Aberlado and Carla.
Language exchanges are held most days of the weeks and are a great option to practice your language and meet others. They are mainly for English and Spanish but other languages can be found too.
