Cartagena is the jewel of the Colombian coast and thousands of visitors flock there every year. The city offers a Caribbean climate, a beautiful walled city, a unique mix of cultures and many nearby beaches. With access to the islands, the coast and a busy tourist scene, Cartagena is the perfect base for a language holiday.
About the city
The old town of Cartagena is a beautifully preserved colonial walled city and deserves its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In contrast to the modern Bocagrande with its glass skyscrapers, it is an impressive sight. Temperatures can be suffocating, but visitors refresh themselves on the beaches or relax in the leafy plazas.
The majority of visitors stay in the Old City. It is small, accessible, and strolling through its colorful streets at day or night is a delight. It has some of the best restaurants and boutique hotels in the country, although some of the highest prices, too.
Getsemani is the bohemian neighbourhood of the city. Once the area for prostitutes and thieves, it is now the trendiest part of the city with plenty of street art, bars, hostels and cafes.
Cartagena’s nightlife is not as vibrant as Bogota, Medellin or Cali, but it makes up for it with its beaches and relaxed atmosphere. There are beautiful city beaches in Bocagrande and La Boquilla, but for the most unspoiled beaches take one of the many boat trips to Playa Blanca, Isla Grande or the Rosario Islands.
Students come to Cartagena to combine classes with beach life, and some schools offer language courses together with tourist activities such as watersports or salsa. All the main schools in Colombia have branches here, including Kalamari Spanish School and Letra Caribe Language School. Tutors and language exchanges are fewer but available, but they may not be as experienced at advanced levels due to the high turnover of short-stay tourists. If you are looking for a private tutor in Cartegena, be sure to contact Prune.
